SAFETY FLOORING SOLUTIONS

Slip ratings measure a floor's ability to prevent slips and falls, particularly in wet or oily conditions. The ratings are determined by standard tests that help match the appropriate flooring to the level of slip risk in a given environment.

Common slip rating systems

(Barefoot Test)

is specifically for areas where people will be walking barefoot, such as showers, changing rooms, and pool surrounds.

• During the test, a surface is tilted while a person walks on it barefoot and with a water and soap contaminant.

• The rating is based on the angle at which the person slips.

• Rating classifications:

  • Class A: Safe for angles between 12 and 18 degrees.

  • Class B: Safe for angles between 18 and 24 degrees.

  • Class C: Safe for angles over 24 degrees, offering the best resistance for barefoot areas.

R-Rating (German Ramp Test)

The R-rating, based on the DIN 51130 German Ramp Test, is one of the most widely used systems for flooring where users wear shoes.

• The test involves measuring the angle at which a person wearing safety boots slips on an inclined surface with motor oil applied to it.

• The rating ranges from R9 (lowest slip resistance) to R13 (highest slip resistance), with safety flooring typically rated R10 or higher.

• R-rating guidelines according to All Print Supplies:

  • R9: Low slip resistance, for dry areas only.

  • R10: Moderate slip resistance, for areas kept largely dry.

  • R11: High slip resistance, for transitional areas that can be wet occasionally.

  • R12: Very high slip resistance, for wet areas or slopes.

  • R13: Extremely high slip resistance, for very wet areas or slopes.

Pendulum Test Value (PTV)

THE PENDULUM TEST

The UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) favors the Pendulum Test (BS 7976-2), which simulates a heel striking a wet floor, as this is when most slips happen.

• The resulting PTV score indicates the slip potential, with higher values meaning better slip resistance.

• PTV rating guidelines:

  • 0-24 PTV: High slip potential.

  • 25-35 PTV: Moderate slip potential.

  • 36+ PTV: Low slip potential, with a slip risk of approximately 1 in a million.
